Amazon Business vs Prime Business (2026): Start Free or Pay for Delivery?

Separate work purchases with a free Amazon Business account, then see when Duo or a paid Prime Business plan earns its keep for your team.

You order office supplies on a personal Amazon account, then spend month-end sorting work receipts from household orders. A free Amazon Business account can give that purchasing a separate home. Prime Business is a separate membership decision: it adds delivery and, on some tiers, more purchasing controls. Paying for it only makes sense when those benefits solve a recurring problem.

Verdict: Start with the free Amazon Business account if separating work orders and users would help. An eligible sole proprietor who already pays for personal Prime can evaluate Duo. A team should compare its real eligible orders, user count and control needs with the current Prime Business price before paying. Amazon Business is not a discounted version of personal Prime. It is a purchasing account for businesses and organizations, with tools for business pricing, quantity discounts, users, approvals, payment methods, and spend reporting. Registration is free, has no minimum spend, and does not require a Prime Business subscription.

We rechecked registration requirements and the US Prime Business plan page on October 24, 2026. Listed prices exclude applicable tax; offers, trials and account eligibility can change. The free account and the membership are different commitments.

The last row matters. Amazon’s Prime comparison describes Prime Business as a buying membership, distinct from personal Prime’s entertainment benefits. Duo does not cancel or pay for the personal membership that makes it eligible. Our Amazon memberships comparison discusses those separate household subscriptions; check its older price references against current terms.

What the Free Amazon Business Account Includes

A free account creates a boundary between personal and business buying. Orders, payment methods, addresses, and purchasing activity can stay in a business context rather than being mixed with household purchases. That separation can reduce cleanup when reconciling expenses or preparing records for an accountant.

Amazon describes business pricing on eligible products, quantity discounts, case packs and multi-user purchasing. None guarantees that every item costs less than the consumer listing. Compare the final unit price, seller, delivery date and return terms for the exact quantity you need.

Organizations can add buyers to one business account. A solo operator may not need approval policies; a growing office should check which controls are available in its free account and which Guided Buying features require a paid tier before setting a purchasing process.

For a paper-heavy operation, pair the account structure with a reliable document scanner and home-office shredder so receipts and sensitive documents follow a consistent workflow.

Prime Business Plans Explained

Prime Business adds fast, free delivery on eligible business orders and plan-specific purchasing benefits. Amazon’s current US page lists five plans. A 30-day trial or discount shown to one visitor is not a general price reduction; read the terms presented to your account.

Duo: Best for a Sole Proprietor with Personal Prime

Duo has no additional membership fee for an eligible sole proprietor already paying for personal Prime and supports one business user. Amazon says the personal and business accounts are linked using different emails for this arrangement. Household entertainment stays with the personal membership; eligible business delivery and rewards apply to the business account.

For an eligible one-person business, check Duo before paying for Essentials. Duo is not a free way to obtain personal Prime: the separate personal membership remains a cost. Upgrade when more users, shipping patterns or paid purchasing controls solve a real process problem.

Essentials: Best for Teams of Up to Five

Essentials costs $179 per year and supports up to five users. Amazon lists Spend Visibility and Guided Buying among its added tools. Those features become useful when purchases are spread across several people and someone needs a consolidated view or clear guardrails.

The fee works out to about $14.92 per month ($179 ÷ 12), before tax. That calculation does not prove savings. Compare actual eligible delivery charges and frequency with your existing ordering pattern, then decide whether the additional visibility and buying controls are worth the rest. If they are not, remain on the free account.

Small, Medium, and Enterprise

Small supports up to 20 users for $499 per year. Amazon says approved Small and Medium customers may receive 45-day payment terms through a Business Credit Account, while Enterprise customers may receive 60-day terms. Credit approval is separate from membership and should not be treated as guaranteed financing.

Medium supports up to 200 users for $1,299 per year. Enterprise supports unlimited users for $10,099 per year. At those levels, the decision should involve procurement, accounting, security, and whoever owns approval policy. A plan comparison article cannot substitute for an organization-specific review.

Who Should Create a Free Account

  • Freelancers and sole proprietors: separate client, equipment, and supply purchases from household orders.
  • Small offices: consolidate users, business payment methods, and recurring supplies under one account.
  • Contractors and makers: compare quantity pricing and case packs for consumables, tools, and protective equipment.
  • Nonprofits, schools, and public organizations: use organization-specific purchasing controls and investigate applicable tax-exemption procedures.
  • Distributed teams: maintain shared purchasing visibility without passing around personal Amazon credentials.

The account is less compelling when you make only a handful of work purchases each year and already have clean bookkeeping. It is also not a substitute for expense policy, inventory control, or accounting software.

Registration and Verification Requirements

The registration FAQ says a work email and company information are enough to begin; Amazon may request an EIN, business license or official state document for verification. Set a durable business-controlled owner email and decide who may add buyers before sending invitations. Keep payment methods and delivery locations accurate, and use individual access rather than a shared password.

A Practical Upgrade Test

Start with the free account for one full purchasing cycle, then answer four questions:

  1. How many eligible business orders did the organization place?
  2. What shipping charges or delivery delays would Prime Business have changed?
  3. How many people need their own access, limits, or approvals?
  4. Did reporting or guided purchasing replace meaningful administrative work?

Choose Duo when one eligible personal Prime member runs the business account. Choose Essentials when two to five users and basic controls produce measurable value. Move to Small or higher only when headcount and procurement needs clearly require the larger plan.

If the main problem is filing receipts rather than shipping speed or team controls, the free account and a consistent export/reconciliation routine may solve it without another membership.

FAQ

Is an Amazon Business account free?

Yes. Amazon says registration is free, with no long-term commitment and no minimum spend. Prime Business is an optional paid membership layered onto the free business account.

Do I need an LLC to open an Amazon Business account?

Amazon Business serves organizations ranging from sole proprietors to large enterprises. Registration requires business information, and Amazon may request supporting documents during verification. Provide accurate information for the business structure you actually operate.

Can I use personal Prime with Amazon Business?

Eligible sole proprietors with personal Prime can use the free Prime Business Duo plan. Personal Prime remains the household membership, while Duo applies business purchasing benefits to the separate business account.

Does Prime Business include Prime Video or Amazon Music?

No. Amazon states that Prime Business is a business purchasing membership and does not include personal entertainment benefits such as Prime Video or Amazon Music.

Is Amazon Business always cheaper than regular Amazon?

No. Business pricing, quantity discounts, and case packs apply to eligible listings, but the lowest final price can vary by seller, quantity, shipping, and return terms. Compare the exact order before purchasing.

Bottom Line

A free Amazon Business account is a low-commitment way to separate work purchasing, add users, and test business pricing and reporting. Solo operators with personal Prime should evaluate Duo before paying for another plan. Teams should upgrade only when shipping volume, user count, or administrative controls produce value greater than the annual fee.
