PicksLab Review Methodology
We publish practical recommendations using one of two methods. Every article should make clear which method supports its conclusions.
Hands-On Reviews
A hands-on review is based on direct use by a PicksLab contributor. The article should identify the product or plan used, the approximate test period, the tasks performed, and any important limits. We do not turn a short demo into a long-term reliability claim.
Expert-Researched Guides
Most product roundups are expert-researched guides. We compare manufacturer documentation, technical specifications, compatibility, warranty terms, current retail availability, other reviews, independent source material, and our category experience. We attribute manufacturer performance claims and do not present them as our own test results.
How We Evaluate Products
- Use-case fit: the best choice depends on the buyer, not a universal score.
- Decision-critical specifications: we compare the features that change the purchase decision, not every line on a spec sheet.
- Total cost: required accessories, subscriptions, maintenance, and likely upgrade costs matter.
- Tradeoffs: each recommendation should explain who should skip it and why.
- Availability: affiliate product links must lead to a current US listing with an active purchase path when checked.
Prices, Ratings, and Performance Claims
Retail prices change, so we avoid presenting an old price as current. We do not invent ratings or combine review scores into a PicksLab score. Claims such as battery life, ice retention, range, or capacity are identified as manufacturer claims unless we measured them ourselves.
How Recommendations Are Structured
- A top recommendation and alternatives for materially different buyers
- Clickable comparison tables using decision-relevant specifications
- Plain-language limitations and reasons to choose another option
- A dated methodology or sourcing note when additional context is useful
Affiliate Independence
PicksLab may earn a commission when a reader purchases through an affiliate link. A commission does not guarantee inclusion or determine rank. See our affiliate disclosure for details.
Updates and Corrections
We refresh articles when availability, specifications, pricing, or category conditions change materially. We remove products that are no longer purchasable and correct unsupported claims when they are identified. Readers can report an issue at thrasosoft@gmail.com.
