KeyGuard Pro vs igloohome Keybox 3: Let Guests In While You're Away

A key box saves you waiting around for guests. KeyGuard keeps it simple; igloohome adds temporary PINs you can issue from away, with more upkeep.

Your guest’s flight is late, the cleaner is coming tomorrow, and neither visit lines up with when you can be at the property. A key box gives people a way to collect a physical key without arranging a handoff. The important difference is what happens after they leave: can you issue a different code from home, or does someone need to visit the box?

The KeyGuard Pro SL-590-CVR is a mechanical wall box with a combination you change in person. The igloohome Keybox 3 adds time-limited PINs generated through an app. That can save a trip between bookings, but it also adds batteries and account management. Neither system makes a retrieved physical key impossible to copy.

Quick answer: Choose the KeyGuard when a simple, fixed combination and a permanent mounting location matter more than remote turnover. Choose the Keybox 3 when you regularly need to issue time-limited PINs while away and can accept batteries, app setup and a higher purchase price. Neither box makes a shared key impossible to copy. For a property where access needs frequent revocation or an audit trail, investigate a professionally installed access system rather than treating any portable key box as the whole security plan.

For an occasional family visit, paying extra to generate remote PINs may solve a problem you don’t have. For back-to-back bookings, a code that has an intended access window is much more useful than reusing one combination indefinitely. Offline PIN generation does not imply instant remote cancellation of every existing credential; check the supported management procedure before relying on revocation.

Price checked: $46.95, October 28, 2026.

Key specs: Interior: 4 in high × 2-3/8 in wide × 1-1/8 in deep; Mounting: wall screws and anchors supplied; Code: user-resettable mechanical push-button combination.

These are FJM’s published SL-590-CVR specifications. Measure your key bundle before purchase. The rubber cover shelters the keypad, but we found no independent IP rating or comparable weather test for this model.

Choose it for a fixed handoff point with infrequent code changes. Once mounted, a person with the combination can retrieve a key without app setup or batteries. The lower checked price matters if you need several boxes. FJM’s combination instructions require opening the box to set a new code and testing that code before closing it. A guest who still knows the old code retains access until someone changes it in person.

Skip it if you need to issue a unique expiring PIN from another city. A mechanical reset at the box is the wrong workflow for frequent remote turnovers. Choose a mounting location where the wall and fasteners are suitable, and do not assume the maker’s marketing terms establish resistance to prying or key theft. If a code is lost, FJM’s instructions do not provide remote recovery; plan who maintains physical access.

Ongoing cost: No battery or app subscription is needed for the mechanical combination. You still need a suitable mounting surface and a process to rotate the code and account for the keys. This is not a replacement for rekeying after a lost key or suspected copy.

2. igloohome Keybox 3

Price checked: $179.99, October 28, 2026.

Key specs: Interior: 4.3 × 3.4 × 1.1 in; Power: four AAA alkaline batteries, with manufacturer-stated life up to 12 months; Protection: manufacturer-rated IP66 against dust and water jets, not immersion.

These are from igloohome’s Keybox 3 product information. Check that your particular keys, cards or fob fit the shallow interior before relying on the dimensions alone.

Choose it when access windows change while you are away. igloohome describes one-time, duration, recurring and permanent PINs generated through algoPIN; a generated PIN can work at the box without a live Wi-Fi connection there. That is useful for separate guest stays or scheduled service access. It does not mean you can remotely erase a previously shared key or watch live openings from the basic box. The optional Bridge is separate; igloohome says real-time activity logs require it.

Skip it if an app account, battery maintenance or the $179.99 checked price is too much for an occasional family spare key. The igloohome app and account are required for setup. See the official app quick-start guide. Four AAA batteries eventually need replacement. The USB-C emergency power input is a backup for a flat battery, not a reason to ignore battery checks. If you depend on Airbnb Connect, igloohome’s support page says its free trial lasts until further notice; future service cost is not guaranteed. Verify current terms before building a rental workflow around the integration.

Ongoing cost: Budget replacement AAA cells and time to manage users and keys. A Bridge is an additional purchase if you require the stated live activity feature; its price isn’t included in the comparison.

High-risk property or rapid key revocationNeither aloneA copied physical key still works; evaluate door hardware and access policy.

The difference between a PIN expiring and a physical key being returned matters. A guest can photograph or copy a key after opening either box. Change a door cylinder or credential when the real risk calls for it. Do not place a key box where it obstructs exits or violates a property agreement. If your aim is to stop distributing physical keys, consider a smart front-door lock instead. A video doorbell answers a different question, who is at the entrance, and doesn’t revoke access.

Before the first stay, put the actual key bundle inside, close and reopen the box, and test the guest’s access procedure without your own phone doing the unlocking. Send directions that identify the correct entrance and box. After checkout, have someone confirm that the key is back, not just that the booking ended. That last step is necessary with either product.

FAQ

Does Keybox 3 need Wi-Fi at the box to accept a temporary code?

Igloohome says its algoPIN codes work offline at the box. You still need the app/account to configure and manage access, and an optional Bridge for the maker’s real-time activity feature.

Can I change a KeyGuard Pro code remotely?

No. FJM’s reset procedure is performed with the box open. Test the new sequence before closing it.

Is an IP66 claim a theft-resistance rating?

No. Igloohome’s IP66 claim concerns dust and water jets. We found no comparable independent forced-entry ratings for these exact models, so this article does not rank their physical security.

What happens if the Keybox 3 batteries run down?

The maker describes a USB-C emergency power input. Keep replacement AAA cells available and check the box before a guest arrives; emergency power is not a substitute for routine maintenance.

Bottom line

The KeyGuard Pro is the straightforward fit for an occasional handoff someone can maintain in person. Keybox 3 earns its higher price when temporary codes save repeated trips to the property. Buy the access workflow you need, and keep a separate plan for missing or copied keys.
